When Should You Use Ice vs Heat?

Knowing whether to use ice or heat can make a big difference in managing pain and recovering from injury. While both can help relieve discomfort, they are used for different stages and types of injuries. At Action Plus Physiotherapy, we often recommend the following guidelines:

Ice Therapy ❄️ Heat Therapy 🔥
Best for new injuries Best for ongoing stiffness
Helps reduce swelling & inflammation Helps relax tight muscles
Useful within the first 24–72 hours Better for chronic aches & tension
Common for sprains, strains & swelling Common for neck, back, muscle tightness

Apply for 15–20 minutes at a time Apply for 15–20 minutes at a time

Tips

  • Always place a towel between the ice/heat pack and your skin.
  • Avoid falling asleep with heat packs applied.
  • If swelling is present, ice is usually the better option.
  • If muscles feel tight or stiff, heat is often more effective.

If you’re unsure whether ice or heat is best for your injury, our physiotherapy team can assess your condition and guide you toward the most appropriate treatment and recovery plan.
